Dr. Jordan Cohen advises on strategy and management of academic medical centers.  Dr. Cohen is the president emeritus of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and during his 12 years as president (1994-2006) served as the nation’s leading spokesperson for academic medicine. Dr. Cohen expanded and modernized AAMC services for medical students, residents, and constituents; strengthened the association's communications, advocacy, and data gathering, and established new initiatives to improve medical education, research, and patient care.

Prior to leading the AAMC, Dr. Cohen was dean of the medical school and professor of medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and president of the medical staff at University Hospital; professor and associate chairman of Medicine at the University of Chicago-Pritzker School of Medicine, and physician-in-chief and chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center. He also held medical faculty positions at Harvard, Brown, and Tufts universities and was president of the medical staff at the New England Medical Center Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Cohen is chairman of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and a director of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation of New York, the Foundation for Biomedical Research, Morehouse School of Medicine, National Medical Fellowships, and the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science & Community Development. He is also a member of the Special Medical Advisory Group of the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Dr. Cohen has held many national leadership positions in academic medicine and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences' Institute of Medicine.

Dr. Cohen is a graduate of Yale College and Harvard Medical School and completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine on the Harvard service at the Boston City Hospital.  His chief areas of research interest were acid-base metabolism and renal physiology. He is the author of more than 100 articles and is the former editor of Kidney International's Nephrology Forum.
