The research enterprise is an extensively networked community that crosses traditional boundaries of for-profit and non-profit organizations. The centers of excellence in a particular field – non-profit, university, and industrial – are mainly well-informed about the research quality and focus of their peer institutions. This knowledge forms the basis for peer review and its corporate equivalent, the independent external advisory group.
The consulting practice of The Washington Advisory Group reflects the background of our Directors and covers a full spectrum of advisory services relevant to the leaders of higher education and R&D and research organizations. Our typical engagement starts with an inquiry from a CEO or Board member, the President or Provost, or the Vice President for Research. The prospective client has an organizational challenge, a problem to be solved, or a desire to pursue a new research opportunity or direction.
Our clients tend to be research universities and academic medical centers, Fortune 500 or venture-backed companies, federal or state funding agencies, and foundations and associations. Our consulting engagements range from highly-focused assignments to broad-ranging organizational studies and systematic reviews. Most engagements involve site visits by a Director and project team members, structured fact-finding, and individual consultations with organizational leaders. Many of our engagements are confidential in nature. When they are not, a workshop or symposium can be held to present recommendations and findings. We also publish reports subject to client review and approval.
