Bruce R. Guile
Managing Director
The Washington Advisory Group, an LECG Company

Bruce Guile brings over 20 years experience in industrial economics, and in organizational design and strategy.  His primary focus has been on enterprises directly engaged in research, development, commercialization, or higher education, either as their primary activity or as key elements of their mission.

In 1996 he joined in founding The Washington Advisory Group and has served continuously as the company’s Managing Director or President up to and after the sale of the company to LECG in October 2004.   Representative projects where Dr. Guile personally organized and led Washington Advisory Group teams include:

  • Design and implementation of the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor, a $1 billion State foundation investing in university-industry biotechnology research primarily at University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and Wayne State University

  • Design and establish, with support from major U.S. internet and communications companies, the Internet Policy Institute, a research-based policy analysis organization.

  • Providing ongoing strategic advice, due diligence support and deal flow development to TVM Life Sciences, an early stage (often university spin-outs) biotech venture fund based in Munich and Boston.

  • Development of governance and management mechanisms for higher education and university-industry collaborative research enterprises at Education City (Carnegie Mellon University, Weill Cornell Medical College, Texas A&M) in Doha, Qatar.

  • Exploration, with support from Microsoft and the U.S. National Science Foundation, of the establishment of a non-profit consortium of software companies to develop and provide advanced educational software for higher education.

In addition, as Managing Director or President, Dr. Guile has been involved in the design and oversight of virtually every project carried out by the Washington Advisory Group.

Dr. Guile is a managing member of Development Partners (www.dpmgt.net), a company which organizes early stage investments in new science and technology.

Prior to joining in founding WAG, Dr. Guile was the long-standing Director of Programs for the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (NAE).  Joining the NAE in 1984 as a Fellow, Dr. Guile is the author or editor of more than 20 monographs or books on the industrial organization and microeconomics of research and development.  At the NAE he led projects on commercialization of new technologies; capital markets, innovation management and corporate investment portfolios; and innovation and capital in start-ups and small high-tech businesses.  In 1994–1995, he led the Academy’s work with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy on the industrial ecology of service industries.

Dr. Guile earned a PhD in Public Policy from University of California Berkeley (1987), a Master’s Degree in Public Policy Studies from the University of Michigan (1979), and a BA in English Literature and Computer Science, with honors, from Heidelberg College (1977).
