Karen Holbrook advises on management, leadership and program development for universities and on technology-based economic development for communities.
Dr. Holbrook is the immediate past President of The Ohio State University, the nation’s largest public university, with an annual budget of $3.8 billion. Previously, she served as Senior Vice President and Provost at the University of Georgia; Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Florida, and Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
While Dr. Holbrook was President at Ohio State, the university made significant strides in the national rankings, the qualifications and graduation rates of students, and the size of the endowment. Annual research funding increased from $426 million to $720 million, placing Ohio State seventh among public universities and second in industry funding. Dr. Holbrook co-founded TechColumbus, was a member of the Governor’s Commission on Higher Education and the Economy, and co-chaired the Science and Mathematics Policy Advisory Council to promote science and engineering education at all levels. Ohio State, Battelle Memorial Institute and The Education Council partnered to create a new public STEM high school in Columbus adjacent to the Ohio State and Battelle campuses.
At Georgia, Dr. Holbrook helped create the Biomedical and Health Services Institute, three new colleges, and the New Media Institute, and played a key role in developing the university's Strategic Plan. At Florida she expanded the research park, co-founded the North Florida Technology Innovation Center, and organized “The Future of Science and Technology in Florida: High Tech Florida Means Business” partnership with the Governor’s Office, the state university system, and the private sector.
Dr. Holbrook has held leadership roles in numerous professional and honorary societies throughout her career, including the AAAS, where she is a Fellow and served on the Board of Directors. She currently serves on corporate boards at ACT and Techne, Inc., is a Trustee for Embry Riddle University, and is a member of the International Advisory Council for King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.
Dr. Holbrook held tenured professorships in Departments of Cell Biology and Medicine throughout her career as a university administrator and leader, and was an NIH-funded MERIT Award investigator at the University of Washington in human fetal skin development and genetic skin disease. She earned B.S. and M.S. degrees at the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D at the University of Washington, School of Medicine.
