Mitchell T. Rabkin Co-Authors Study on Modern Health Care
Mitchell T. Rabkin, M.D. and John. S. Cook, D.Phil. have written an article in Academic Medicine which combines a new and critical insight into Medicare with some proven methodologies of health care financing and delivery to offer a feasible approach that would be applicable not only to Medicare, but also to Medicaid, a group of community health centers, even the uninsured and the private sector as well. D. Allan Bromley Wins American Physical Society’s Nicholson Medal
The American Physical Society (APS) 2002 Nicholson Prize has been awarded to
D. Allan Bromley, Sterling Professor of the Sciences at Yale University. The award is given in recognition of Dr. Bromley’s roles as research scientist, an outstanding teacher, a supportive mentor and colleague, a leader of the physics community in this country and worldwide, and advisor to governments. Founded in 1899, the APS is the major professional society for physics in the country, with members worldwide.
Daniel C. Tosteson Awarded the 2002 Harvard Medal
The Harvard Alumni Association recognized Daniel C. Tosteson, and three other distinguished alumni, Peter A. Brooke, Sharon Elliott Gagnon and John A. Lithgow as recipients of the 2002 Harvard Medal. First given in 1981, the Harvard Medal recognizes extraordinary service to the University. Dr. Tosteson is the Caroline Shields Walker Distinguished Professor of Cell Biology and Dean Emeritus of the Harvard Medical School. Dean from 1977 to 1997, he changed medical education at Harvard through the design and implementation of the New Pathway to General Medical Education.
Maxine Savitz Joins The Washington Advisory Group, LLC
The Washington Advisory Group is pleased to welcome Maxine Savitz, to the firm. Dr. Savitz is the former Deputy Assistant Secretary for Conservation, U.S. Department of Energy. She subsequently held executive positions in Lighting Research Institute, The Garrett Corporation, AlliedSignal Ceramic Components, and Honeywell International. Dr. Savitz is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Science Board, and the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board. Dr. Savitz will advise on research and development management, energy and environmental policy, materials development, production and utilization, and technology transfer projects.
Frank Press Appointed to Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Advisory Council
Frank Press has recently been appointed member of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Advisory Council. The JPL, managed by the California Institute of Technology, is NASA's lead center for robotic exploration of the solar system. As a member of the JPL Advisory Council, Dr. Press will provide the Director and Executive Council objective and independent advice on all aspects of JPL activities.
Robert White and Frank Press Appointed to Advisory Council of U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF)
Robert White and Frank Press have joined the prestigious list of Advisory Council members of the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF). The CRDF is a nonprofit charitable organization created by the United States Government in 1995. This unique public-private partnership promotes scientific and technical collaboration between the United States and the countries of the Former Soviet Union (FSU).
Robert White Appointed to the Ocean Commission Science Advisory Panel (OCSAP)
Robert White has been appointed to serve as a member of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy, Ocean Commission Science and Advisory Panel. The Oceans Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-256 effective January 20, 2001), established a 16-member Commission on Ocean Policy to undertake an 18-month study and to make recommendations to the President and Congress for a national ocean policy for the United States.
Joe B. Wyatt Elected Chairman of the Board of New American Schools
Joe B. Wyatt has been elected Chairman of the Board of New American Schools (NAS). Mr. Wyatt is replacing John Doyle Ong, who was appointed Ambassador to Norway by President Bush. Established in 1991 by the chief executives of the most successful businesses in the U.S., NAS is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that works to increase student achievement through comprehensive school improvement.
Erich Bloch Honored with 2002 Vannevar Bush Award
The National Science Board (NSB) named Erich Bloch the 24th recipient of its highest award for scientific achievement and statesmanship. He received the 2002 Vannevar Bush Award in tribute to his long-standing reputation in research and innovation, and his senior statesman status in science and engineering. "Erich Bloch is a visionary innovator of enormous stature – in both high technology for the private sector – and in the organization and objectives of science and engineering, and science and mathematics education programs funded by the Federal government," said Eamon Kelly, the NSB chair.
Michael Rosenblatt, M.D., Joins The Washington Advisory Group, LLC
The Washington Advisory Group is pleased to welcome Michael Rosenblatt, M.D., to the firm. At Merck Research Laboratories, Dr. Rosenblatt led discovery efforts for osteoporosis therapies and took Alendronate (Fosamax) from the laboratory to worldwide clinical research and development. Subsequently, he served as president of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He is a leader in medical education and research, and is currently the George R. Minot Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Rosenblatt will advise on academic medical center and biomedical projects.
Andrew Werth Presents Paper at Telkom South Africa Client Forum
Andrew Werth was invited to speak at the Telkom South Africa Client Forum in Sun City, South Africa in March 2002. Telkom is the operating telephone company with a monopoly position that is scheduled to end later this year. The Forum for their leading clients was in recognition of a new era in which Telkom will be competing with newly established service providers. Werth was one of four invited speakers to address this unique group. Others were from Cisco Europe, the Gartner Group and SAP. The title of his presentation was Strategic Alliances – Their Impact on Development.
AAAS Search for Chief Executive Officer a Success
The Washington Advisory Group together with Isaacson Miller led the successful search for Alan I. Leshner to become the Chief Executive Officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest, general scientific organization. Dr. Leshner is a psychologist and neuroscientist who has spent the last seven years directing the nation's efforts to use "the power of science" to combat drug addiction. Prior to joining AAAS, Alan I. Leshner, was the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health.
