University of Texas Implements WAG Recommendations; Announces $2.56 Billion Initiative in Science, Technology, Engineering and Health
The University of Texas has announced a $2.56 billion investment to boost competitiveness in key scientific areas at a number of its campuses, implementing recommendations made by WAG in a 2004 report. “This investment is the largest commitment to science and technology infrastructure that has been made by a higher education system in the country,” said UT System Chancellor Mark G. Yudof.

Erich Bloch Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Erich Bloch has been elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in a 2006 Class of 195 scholars, scientists, artists, civic, corporate and philanthropic leader.  "It gives me great pleasure to welcome these outstanding leaders in their fields to the Academy," said Academy President Patricia Meyer Spacks in announcing the 2006 Class on April 24, 2006.  "Fellows are selected through a highly competitive process that recognizes individuals who have made preeminent contributions to their disciplines and to society at large."  Erich Bloch, one of the founders of The Washington Advisory Group, is widely recognized for his achievements in the field of engineering, including his leadership in the development of semiconductor technologies for computers, and for his contributions in strengthening R&D policy, strategy and management in the U.S. and internationally.

Frank Press Recipient of First SSA Public Service Award
Frank Press has received the first Seismological Society of America (SSA) Public Service Award in recognition of his lifetime of exemplary public service.  The award honors outstanding work that serves seismology and public information relating to seismology. The award was presented to Dr. Press at the SSA 100th Anniversary Earthquake Conference and Annual Meeting, which coincided with the SSA centenary of its establishment in 1906 as a response to the San Francisco Earthquake.   Frank Press has been recognized in the past for his scientific contributions in a number of areas including earthquake seismology, seismic-wave propagation, crust and mantle structure, and lunar constitution. He has played key leadership roles in the establishment of numerous highly successful programs including the International decade of Natural Hazard reduction, the World Wide Standardized Seismographic Network and the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program.  

Also in April, Frank Press participated in a lecture series at the University of Colorado-Boulder’s Center for Science and Technology Policy Research.  The series is entitled “Policy, Politics, and Science in the White House: Conversations with Presidential Science Advisors”. Dr. Press discussed the role of scientist as advisor, drawing on his White House experience in the Carter Administration, as well as his tenure as President of the National Academy of Science.

Robert Corell, an Affiliate of The Washington Advisory Group and one of the world's leading authorities on arctic warming and global climate change, was the lead interviewee on CBS "60 Minutes" report on global warming on February 19, 2006. 


Charles E. Young Joins The Washington Advisory Group
The Washington Advisory Group is pleased to welcome Charles E. ("Chuck") Young to the firm.  Dr. Young is thePresident Emeritus, University of Florida and Chancellor Emeritus, University of California, Los Angeles.  Between 1968 and 1997 he led UCLA’s development from a regional academic campus into a nationally recognized university.  From 1999 to 2003 he shepherded the University of Florida through an unprecedented reorganization of its governing structure.  Young has been a leader in higher education in the U.S. for more than three decades.  He returned to the U.S. after nearly two years in the Persian Gulf, where he served as president of the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development.  He will work with The Washington Advisory Group in the University Consulting practice.


Saginaw Future Hires Delphi Medical Systems CEO to Implement Mid-Michigan Medical Device Strategy
Saginaw Future Inc., (SFI) a leading economic development organization in mid-Michigan, has hired Christophe Sevrain, the former CEO of Delphi Medical Systems, to implement a job creation strategy for the region in the medical device and diagnostics industry.  The Washington Advisory Group developed the strategy recommendations for SFI.  View the Strategy Report.   


C. Thomas Caskey Will Direct Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine at UT Health Science Center
On January 5, 2006 Tom Caskey, a Washington Advisory Group Director, was named the Director and CEO of Brown Foundation Institute of Molecular Medicine, aresearch institute in Houston that investigates the cause of human diseases at the cellular and molecular levels using DNA and protein technologies to elucidate disease mechanisms.  See the press release


The Washington Advisory Group Publishes "Eye Diseases in Divergent Populations"
The fourth in a series of workshops on eye disease and related therapies was conducted by the Washington Advisory Group, June 11-14, 2005 at Rancho Valencia in California. The topic was “Eye Diseases in Divergent Populations.” Twenty eminent experts focused on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical management of Myopia, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Age Related Macular Degeneration. The meeting was co-chaired by Drs. Gerald Chader of the Doheny Eye Institute and Bronwyn Bateman of the Rocky Mountain Eye Institute.  The Washington Advisory Group recently published the fourth workshop report.  For previous eye disease workshop reports, please see Publications.
