Karen A. Holbrook Joins The Washington Advisory Group as Director
Karen Holbrook, the immediate past President of the Ohio State University, has joined the Washington Advisory Group as a Director. Dr. Holbrook is currently the Vice President for Research and Innovation at the University of South Florida in Tampa.  President Holbrook joined WAG as a Director in September 2007.

Jack Breese and Hunt Williams Join The Washington Advisory Group as Directors
Jack Breese and Hunt Williams have joined the Washington Advisory Group as Directors. Both were previously WAG Affiliates. Breese is a former Director and co-founder of Microsoft Research in Redmond, WA. Williams is the former president and CEO of Merit Network in Ann Arbor, MI. They are both members of the WAG academic and research development project team for King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia.

Charles T. Owens Joins The Washington Advisory as an Affiliate
Tom Owens, the former President and CEO of the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF), has joined the Washington Advisory Group as an Affiliate. Owens led the CRDF in its Congressionally-charged mission to promote international scientific collaboration as a means of nonproliferation support. He previously served as a Foreign Service Officer at the Department of State, led the National Science offices in Tokyo and Paris, and helped establish the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) in Moscow. Mr. Owens is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley. At WAG, he is helping to implement the Global Research Partnership funding program of King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.

The Washington Advisory Group Completes Study for Peter Kiewit Institute at the University of Nebraska
A WAG project team led by Peter Freemen has conducted an assessment for the Peter Kiewit Institute (PKI) at the University of Nebraska. The study focused on PKI’s mission to expand educational and research opportunities in information science and engineering in Nebraska. The primary question posed was, “What is needed to help bring the PKI to the next level of accomplishment?” in terms of achieving a national reputation in information technology research and development. The study reviewed the Colleges and academic units in the Nebraska system and the Omaha business and technology environment, and provided a set of recommended policy changes, administrative adjustments, and programmatic actions to attract top research active faculty and students and stimulate productive engagements with industry. WAG Directors Molly Corbett Broad and Jack Breese and former IBM executive Alfred Spector worked with Peter Freeman on the project team.

Peter Freeman Joins the Washington Advisory Group as a Director
Dr. Freeman, the former Assistant Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) has joined the Washington Advisory Group as a Director. Dr. Freeman served as the Founding Dean of Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology (where he is an Emeritus Dean and Professor), and held positions at George Mason University and the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Freeman will advise on university and R&D strategy and management, especially in computer science, information technology, cyber-infrastructure, research networks, and software development.

The Washington Advisory Group Is the Academic and Research Program Consultant to King Abdullah University of Science and Technology
The Washington Advisory Group is currently serving as the Academic and Research Program Development Consultant to the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a new graduate-level research university in Saudi Arabia. Work on the project began in October 2006 and is expected to continue through Fall 2009. WAG Managing Director Bruce Guile and Directors Jack Breese, Edward Hundert, Jay Morley and Hunt Williams are the project consultants; and Directors Frank Press and Frank H.T. The Washington Advisory Group Forms Blue-Ribbon Commission for SUNY Stony Brook University Hospital and School of Medicine
The Washington Advisory Group has completed a comprehensive review of Stony Brook University Hospital and School of Medicine. At the request of the president of SUNY Stony Brook, WAG formed a Blue Ribbon Commission, chaired by WAG Director Mitchell T. Rabkin, M.D., which prepared a report covering issues found during the course of its review and recommendations/steps to be taken. The report was submitted on January 11, 2007

The Washington Advisory Group Completes Strategic Review of UC-Irvine Medical Center and College of Health Sciences
The Washington Advisory Group has completed a consulting engagement to review strategic issues at UCI College of Health Sciences and its principal teaching hospital, UCI Medical Center. The report provided guidance and recommendations to the University leadership regarding organizational structure and overlap in medical education and research. WAG Directors Jordan J. Cohen and Mitchell T. Rabkin were the medical experts on the project team. The consulting engagement was managed by Director Charles E. Young.
